Practical Shop Math, 2nd Edition
Simple Solutions to Workshop Fractions, Formulas + Geometric Shapes
Tom Begnal
Add some math savvy to your toolbox.
Woodworking and math are as closely connected as a tight-fitting dovetail. There’s no getting around it. Start a woodworking project and the numbers start flying around like sawdust. You start by measuring the thickness, width, and length of various boards and soon there’s a whole gaggle of fractions and decimals. Most of the time, those numbers need to be converted and then added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided. And don’t forget about the geometry that pops up when curves and triangles start getting involved. All of this can be tricky stuff for many woodworkers, especially if it has been years since math class. Fear not, Practical Shop Math has you covered. Packed with simple solutions, helpful illustrations, and handy formulas, Practical Shop Math is perfect for anyone looking to improve their math skills. Once armed with the tool of understanding some math basics, a day in the workshop will involve more fun and production and a whole lot less head-scratching.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Tom Begnal began woodworking as a hobby but his love of the craft evolved into a full-time furniture-making business. When Woodworker’s Journal needed someone to build furniture and write about the process, Tom joined as an editor. Fifteen years later, he began writing and editing woodworking and how-to books for F+W, McGraw-Hill, Rodale Press, and Sterling. That led to two years at Shop Notes in Des Moines followed by nine years as an editor at Fine Woodworking. Tom still lives in Connecticut and can be found most days in his workshop still enjoying his favorite hobby.
